How to illustrate a non hegemonic standpoint ?
One of the challenge of this blog is its design : how to illustrate a non hegemonic world sociology project ? Our first idea was to put something like a world map to illustrate the blog header. But we know that power relations are everywhere, in particular within world maps. Finaly, we have found this map on an indian newspaper’s website, in a paper talking about power relations within representations of the world.
Of course, this map is “centered” (on the Europe and on the Africa), but it shows two kind of shift:
- Between the Mercator projection (where Finland is bigger than India) and the Peters projection.
- And when the South is on the top and the North is below.
It’s just an illustration, certainely not the best one, but the most important is not to show a map: it is to signify the shifting.
